Whitefish River (WRFN) sets new date for cannabis referendum

WHITEFISH RIVER FIRST NATION—A new date has been set for a community consultation on whether to allow cannabis sales within Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) following the postponement of a November referendum.

An information session for band members was set for 5:30 to 8 pm on January 16 at the community centre. The new vote day is February 17 from 9 am to 8 pm at the community centre. The information session consisted of three presentations including the ‘WRFN Study Report’ by Kelsie McGregor; ‘Developing a Cannabis Bylaw’ by band bylaw officer Zachary Corbiere; and general voting information provided by Ratification Officer Cynthia Behm.

The proposed question on the ballot is “Are you in favour of Whitefish River First Nation Chief and Council developing a law that allows and governs the sale of cannabis products on reserve.” Those eligible to vote must be 18 on the day of the vote and their name must appear on the band’s citizenship list. Mail-in ballots are available on request by contacting the band office by email, phone or in person. The mail-in ballots must be received by ratification officer before the end of the voting period.
