MISSISSAUGA—The Whitefish River Warriors located in sunny Birch Island sent 10 teams to the 45th Annual Little NHL Hockey Tournament held March 14 to March 17 in Mississauga. The 16 division tournament had a record 195 teams representing First Nations from all over Ontario.
Of the 10 Warrior teams sent to the tournament, eight of the teams came home with championship trophies and the other two teams battled as finalists in their respective divisions.
Two of the teams made it all the way to Championship Day and received silver place trophies: the Whitefish River Warriors Atom Girls and the Whitefish River Warriors Bantam Boys.
The Whitefish River Warriors Tykes, Novice A, Atom A, Peewees, Bantam Girls and Midget Girls all came back with shining trophies and banners.
The Whitefish River Warriors have been proudly sponsored by the Whitefish River Minor Sports and Recreation Committee and the Whitefish River First Nation leadership, administration and community.
The Whitefish River Warriors executive committee members were also on hand at the 45th Annual Little NHL induction ceremony where two of our community members were inducted into the Little NHL Hockey Hall of Fame: the late Violet McGregor and the late Georgina McGregor.
The Whitefish River Warriors parents and players take pride in the fact that Little NHL founder Jim McGregor cheered for all the Warriors teams throughout the tournament. All our citizens take pride in Jimmy’s legacy and hope to continue his visions and dreams.
