Project Octavia needs to be reinstated
To the Expositor:
A recent in-depth report in Maclean’s detailed an investigation by the RCMP named Project Octavia, which was successful in uncovering and breaking email scams here in Canada. According to this article criminals have contacted every single adult in Canada and many have been defrauded of their hard-earned money. Despite its success and the fact that scams continue to proliferate, someone in the federal government called a halt and Project Octavia was halted. A senior RCMP official says that nowadays, Canada is a go-to country for serious money laundering and that the chances of being prosecuted for the crime is virtually nil.
Surely we have to ask, when will our government wake up? Citizens are being scammed and losing money day after day. Octavia needs to be reinstated and the team given the resources needed to deal with these highly sophisticated criminal organizations which are working against us. It would also be a good idea to identify the bureaucrat who shut it down in the first place. Ottawa needs to act immediately to protect us and—we simply cannot wait!
Sincerely,
Eric Balkind
