When is a heist not a heist?

LITTLE CURRENT—Reports of a recent brazen daylight theft of a greenhouse from the Little Current Community Garden jumped the gun… or to conclusions in any event.

Despite attempts to contact the lease of the property on which the community garden was situated, no one was available to speak to the matter. Neither the town, who owns the property, nor the OPP were able to shed light on the matter by press time Monday.

As it turns out, the greenhouse was pulled from its foundations and the rough cedar planks lining the garden beds by Noojmowin Teg, who held the lease on the property.

The Expositor was contacted by Gloria Goodwill-Aelick to set the matter straight.

“There is no ‘brazen theft’,” she said. “The NEMI Community Garden greenhouse was removed by Noojmowin Teg and relocated to their site.” Ms. Goodwill-Aelick went on to note that lease on the property was scheduled to lapse on December 31 and the current lease did not intend to renew.

“As such, they removed their property from the land and it is plainly visible from the Highway on their Aundeck Omni Kaning property,” she informed The Expositor.

“The NEMI Community Garden was not a vibrant community like some of the other Island community gardens for whatever reason and was completely unused this past year, after a couple of years of being tended only by a couple of individuals.”

Ms. Goodwill-Aelick expressed surprise that, as primary contact for the community garden over the past three years she was not contacted by the paper. Neither the town or Noojmowin Teg referred The Expositor to Ms. Goodwill-Aelick. Nonetheless, The Expositor regrets the shortfall in communication and any discomfort the errant news item may have caused.
