UCCM Police recipient of Safety Leadership Award

TORONTO—The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service was one of four recipients at a recognized Safety Leadership Awards dinner held in Toronto on May 25 by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.

The recognition for this safety award related to the Manitoulin Helmet Campaign initiative that took place at the Lakeview School in M’Chigeeng in June 2016 where nearly 700 bike helmets were distributed to Island youths.

This campaign was put together by a number of Community partners that included the Ontario Safety League, UCCM Anishnaabe Police, Manitoulin OPP, St. John Ambulance (York Region) and the Manitoulin Injury Prevention Coalition.

The goal of this campaign was to increase the rate of safe bike helmet wearing among youth on Manitoulin Island.

Chief of Police Rodney Nahwegahbow stated that he was well pleased with the response to the program and feels this safety initiative has helped promote a culture of bicycle safety for our youth and healthier lifestyles.
