Truth and Reconciliation Committee announces Manitoulin hearing

M’CHIGEENG–The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) will host a hearing at M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island on Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October 26.

The hearing will provide an opportunity for those affected by the Indian Residential School system and its legacy to share their experiences with TRC Commissioner Dr. Marie Wilson as well as with community members and anyone else who would like to learn about and bear witness to the schools’ legacy. It is free to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Those who want to make a private statement to the Commission will also be able to do so.

The hearing will take place at the M’Chigeeng First Nation Community Complex.

Program details are posted at www.trc.ca , where the hearing will also be streamed live.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established as a result of the 2007 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Its mandate is to inform all Canadians about what happened in the 150-year history of the residential schools, and to guide and inspire a process of reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect.
