Tragic car accident claims life of Mindemoya man

IRON BRIDGE—Family and friends are mourning the tragic death of 34-year-old Shawn Gibbons of Mindemoya after his truck plunged over an embankment on Highway 129, just north of Iron Bridge, on Friday night at approximately 8 pm, landing in the Mississagi River below.

Mr. Gibbons is the husband of Amanda (nee Orford) Gibbons and proud father of two sons, Michael, 11 and Zachary, 9.

Ms. Gibbons explained that her husband worked for Gold Corp at the Musselwhite Mine and had just finished a three-week stretch and was returning home to Manitoulin that night for two weeks off with his family.

Ms. Gibbons said their sons “are being pretty tough right now—they’re pretty strong.”

She said her husband of almost 11 years had a love of the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. “He was a really good husband and a good dad,” Ms. Gibbons added. “He was one of a kind.”

A postmortem examination of Mr. Gibbons was performed on Monday but the cause of the accident is not yet known. “We may never know what happened,” she said.

While funeral dates and times had not yet been finally confirmed as of press time Monday, Ms. Gibbons said a wake for her husband would likely be held Wednesday evening (tonight, July 16) with the funeral service on Thursday, July 17, all at the Island Funeral Home in Little Current. Please call the funeral home, 705-368-2490, or check the website at www.islandfuneralhome.ca for confirmation of day and times.
