GORE BAY – The Town of Gore Bay has certainly been abuzz with the many colourful and creative scarecrows that have been displayed over the past couple of weeks. And now the results of the winners in the Gore Bay Scarecrow Challenge have been announced.
“We are happy to announce the winner of the Scarecrow Challenge,” Stasia Carr, deputy-clerk of Gore Bay told the Recorder on Friday of last week. “We had thought as this is a new event, maybe we would get 10 or 12 entries. We are so thrilled with the response and community spirit that has been shown in Gore Bay. Overall there were 31 entries!”
“We would like to thank everyone who entered a scarecrow into the Scarecrow Challenge,” said Ms. Carr. “It was a difficult decision to make as all entries were so well done. Everyone deserves a giant round of applause.”
The scarecrows were judged by the town’s new CAO/treasurer, Darlene Brayton. Her overall favourite scarecrow was Martha’s Inn’s ‘Fishing Couple.’ “Congratulations,” continued Ms. Carr. She pointed out honourable mentions went to Scott and Karen McDougall for creativity in their scarecrow submission and Beulah Hester, Joan Prior and Nancy Clark for their most traditional looking scarecrow.
Each of the three winning submissions received gift bags filled with many items as the prizes.
“We want to thank all those who took the time and effort to participate,” added Ms. Carr.
As an added bonus, Gore Bay was also named first place winner, tied with Assiginack, in The Expositor’s annual Harvest Glory Days inter-community decorating challenge and will receive a brand new sign denoting them as a winner for their efforts.
