GORE BAY—The proposed Gore Bay fitness centre is going to be located in the town’s new recreation park area.

“We have roped off an area in the recreation park for the fitness centre,” Gore Bay councillor Jack Clark (who is on the general government committee) told the Recorder last week. “Our committee had a meeting with the fitness centre committee and told them we were investigating a new location for the fitness centre but had decided to do a new construction instead of looking at an existing building.” It is anticipated that funding for the new fitness centre will be made up of a combination of private financial support and town funds.

“We are in preliminary investigations but we’ve asked Akfit to prepare a layout/design of the centre based on 1,000 square  feet of utilized fitness area,” said Mr. Clark. “We hope to have the layout/design in a couple of weeks which then would go to a request for proposals (RFP) for the construction work to see how feasible it is.”

“It would be nice to have the RFP out by the end of May or early June, so a decision can be made in mid-July,” continued Mr. Clark. “If everything goes according to plan and funding sources, construction can take place in late August or September for occupancy November 1.”

As reported previously the town has hired CRSC Recreation based out of Sudbury for the design, supply and installation of a splash pad at the town park south of Millsite Apartments. Council also gave the go-ahead for other amenities in the park including a tennis court and playground equipment that will complement the splash pad. It should be noted the town’s current playground will remain in its present location. As well, the current soccer field will be moved to Smith Park (just south of the creek and boardwalk).

It is proposed the fitness centre building will have four washrooms, two with exterior entrances to service the other recreation facilities and two with interior entrances to service fitness centre clients. The interior washrooms will include showers. The committee would like a covered patio on the east side and has discussed having windows on the east and north sides with views of the water using two way glass, possible concrete construction, a pitched roof and central air (with the type of heating system to be determined).
