GORE BAY—Gore Bay council has passed a motion awarding the tenders for construction and materials for the replacement of the town’s boardwalk, and its extension.
The municipality had put out a tender for bids on the construction of the new boardwalk and reviewed the bids at a special council meeting last week. Town Clerk Annette Clarke explained the town received two bids, one from Rob Dearing and Sons at a cost of $128,255 including taxes, and from Nevin Merrylees in the amount of $98,310 including taxes.
Council awarded the construction contract to Nevin Merrylees.
Councillor Larry Eirikson questioned the amount that the town had budgeted for the project.
Mayor Ron Lane noted that the “entire boardwalk budget was set at $500,000 and we are under budget so far.”
The second tender council considered was for the boardwalk material tender, with three tenders having been forwarded.
The three bids included Pat Noble Lumber and Building Supplies at $102,128.28 including HST; RONA Little Current Building Supply at $105,396.64; and UCCM Building Materials Supply in the amount of $110,514.60.
The recommendation and motion passed by council was to award the contract to Pat Noble Lumber.
The current boardwalk needs to be replaced as it has been in place for almost 30 years and has outlived its life.
Mayor Ron Lane told the Recorder after the meeting the new boardwalk would be extended as well, stretching from Water Street to East Street as it does now, to the roadside area where the Noble Nature Trail begins. The boardwalk will also include two viewing areas.
