MANITOWANING—The third annual Assiginack youth ball tournament was a success with 12 teams and three divisions bringing in 140 kids, coaches and fans. The teams all played with great sportsmanship and skill and the fans were so positive with their cheering. Among the teams, Manitowaning entered two teams in the 12 and under division. They were there to ensure the kids had fun playing ball. They shared coaches. So, when it came time to play each other, there was constant cheering for every player.
In the 12 and under division Wiky took first place with the Giants team second, while the Bat Attitudes took first place in the 13-15 division with Pitch Please second. In the age 16-18 division, Fatal Flamingos took first with Sons of Pitches second. The tournament took place the second weekend in August.
A huge shout out to the umpires who worked all weekend long starting Thursday night, including Reuben Allen, Murray Gammie, Ryan Stewart, Bud Spry and Larry Harasym. Assiginack Public School was also there volunteering by selling food and drinks to raise money for future grade eight trips.
Earlier in the week, on August 7, the third annual ‘old guys versus young guys’ third annual ball game took place. Once again, the annual game took place under the lights and it was the young ballplayers, in their 20s and 30s, against the senior ballplayers.
Ryan Stewart was not messing around this year—he had pulled out a scoresheet so the scores/rosters would be accurate as the senior men were determined to win after losing the past two years.
As is customary a moment of silence was held for those who have been involved in Assiginack baseball over the years, who we have lost in the past year. Brian Lockyer and Lori Case were remembered.
In a shocking turn of events, the senior team won by two runs, 16-14.
