There’s still time to enroll in youth sailing at Low Island

LITTLE CURRENT—Thirteen students have participated over the first two weeks of the Little Current Yacht Club (LCYC) youth sailing program, instructed by Bryce Mastelko and assisted by Jake Hughson. The weather has mostly cooperated and the students have been swimming as well.

The program still has space available for the weeks of July 16-20, July 23-27 and July 30-August 3 in Little Current. Only three spaces are still available for the week of instruction in Gore Bay, Aug 13-17.

LCYC’s “Get out on the Water Day” at Low Island Park will be held Saturday, August 11. Members of the community are invited to come to the park to try different types of small water craft including paddleboards, canoes, kayaks and small sailboats. The event is free and watermelon will be served. Similar events will be organized by other sailing clubs around Ontario encouraged by Ontario Sailing Association.

“We hope to try free Friday night sailboat racing for larger sailboats,” said LCYC Secretary Mary Tone Rodgers. “Please come to the Anchor Inn at 5 pm on Fridays to find out more details. We hope to start a fun race about 7 pm at the buoys near Boyle Marine’s blue building and race a short course for about an hour, allowing enough time for sailors to get back in time for dinner with friends and family. Races could run Fridays until mid-August.”

Other events include North Channel Race Week from July 23-27, on Facebook at North Channel Race Week. Finally, LCYC’s fall racing series will be on September 8 and 9.

Students can sign up for a half-day, full-day or full week. See lcyc.ca for details and registration form. Also, check out the program on Facebook at Manitoulin CANSail. Look for our float in the Haweater Parade.
