The Manitoulin Connection: Swing Bridge Stories

by Robin Burridge

LITTLE CURRENT—2013 will mark the centennial of the Manitoulin swing bridge. In celebrating this momentous occasion there will numerous events, festivals, a holiday weekend and even a new column in The Expositor.

2013 will be a year of not only celebration, but also of reflections—reflecting on the last 100 years of life on Manitoulin and the role the iconic swing bridge has played over the century.

The swing bridge has become a symbol of the Island and a connection to not only the mainland, but to people.

The Manitoulin Expositor will be sharing these connections through a new column entitled ‘The Manitoulin Connection: Swing Bridge Stories,’ in which the paper will publish reader’s memories about the swing bridge.

‘The Manitoulin Connection’ will start next week with a brief history of the swing bridge from Island historians Sandy McGillivray and Bill Caesar, followed by a story from Northeast Town Mayor Joe Chapman.

Do you have a funny story about waiting for the swing bridge? Do you have a memory of the first time you saw it? Does it mean something special to you or someone in your family?

The Expositor is reaching out to all Islanders or individuals with a story to share about the Little Current swing bridge. Write down your story and send it to The Expositor at The Manitoulin Expositor, P.O. 369, Little Current, Ontario, P0P 1K0 or email us at editor@manitoulin.ca.
