The circus comes to Manitoulin

LITTLE CURRENT—Lights, cameras and action… oh so much action! Circus Genoa held two performances at the NEMI Rec Centre hall recently that saw the arena stands and floor packed with excited children and their parents.

The acts came at the audience in lightning quick succession, complete with plenty of flashing lights, booming music and lots and lots of action.

Tumblers, acrobats, high ladder performers, clowns, hoop performers and jugglers, oh my! The rapid-fire action was perfectly geared to the attention spans of the internet generations, with few taking more than several minutes.

One of the best received performances of the evening was by Mexico City clown Tonito Alexis, whose antics had the children and adults alike in stitches. Most of the performers hail from either Mexico and South America, including Guatemala, Columbia and Argentina, putting a decidedly Latin vibe to the acts.

The show has had a great run across Western Canada, noted an assistant manager at the circus, but it is in Ontario that they have had the greatest number of crowds turning out for the shows.

Unlike many circuses of the past, there were no animal acts in the Circus Genoa lineup, a fact that probably makes travelling around the world a lot easier. The dearth of elephants and big cats did nothing to dampen the mood however and it was evident from the screams of delight and laughter that a good time was had by all.
