This year has us hearing live music varying from a baroque orchestra to Countryfest. We applaud professionals at Café in the Woods and amateurs doing Gilbert and Sullivan at Burns Wharf. We delight in pictures, whether by gifted artists exhibiting on the art tour or hanging at a high-end gallery. As for cooking, more than ever before we are spoiled for choice, from tasty snacks to gourmet dining, including an oyster night in Providence Bay and a lobster night in Gore Bay.
For an ideal combination, nothing beats dinner in Gore Bay and an evening at the Gore Bay Summer Theatre.
Walter Maskel, a director of immense professional stature, has confected an award-winning production of something called The Attic, the Pearls and Three Fine Girls—a swirl of bittersweet hilarity that sends you home thinking of a strange family, and of your own. Clever stagecraft, brilliant lighting and evocative melodies set the table for the feast of a drama dream team. Sumptuous Shannon McMullan and spicy Anita Lalonde tear at each other’s hair. Delicious Tara Bernatchez is their sweet little sister—will she ever lose patience?
When my work was looking after national arts policies, I was reminded now and then that Groucho Marx once said that when he heard the word culture he reached for his wallet. In the case of this adult comedy, reach for another helping. Get it while you can.
