Tehkummah Talk and Times

If you are trying to phone me let the phone ring a bit, I usually get there and they hang up. I’m not one of those who carries a phone booth on my back, and if I’m sitting down by the time I struggle to my feet, and waddle to the phone, or sometimes I’m sitting outside, and my answering machine is activated these days (sometimes, I even say bad words you could learn, if you waited!)

Well Liz Greer, you have done it again! Congratulations on a terrific evening of enjoyment, of talent and food.

Thank you to all who made our day! Loved those utensils!

We went down later, to the ferry and watched boat traffic. I’ve sure seen the “Cheech” a lot this year in her new design. I like watching the little kids excitement most of them in jammies this time of night they usually jump, I do too, when she blows her horn.

One of the nicer days Wednesday; balmy even in the beautiful moonlight.

I’ve had a busy one, not working though. Cribbage eight tables, delicious lunch today, thank you all.

We had two high hands, 24s, Graham and Rick; first place, Graham and Sheila, 949; second, Mary and Jean, 945; third, Sandra and Doris, 943; low, Lori and Rick; door winners of the wooden heart.

I heard folks talking about the hillbilly steak supper, I hadn’t been for years. So, a huge mouth watering steak turned over once, cooked perfectly. Baked potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, strawberry and ice cream dessert. Worth every penny and then some. A silent auction going on at the same time. A wonderful musical treat as the Islanders did their stuff. Sounds wonderful out door. I met Pat and Herrman Falte. Lovely personable young grand-daughter Nicole who has been on holidays from her London home to Sudbury and the Island. From there I went to Sandfield euchre. I remember Irene James won the 50/50 but I can’t recall who won the games.

Good to say hello to Glenna Harrison. She was at the store on Wednesday spending visiting time with Susan Dusting too?? Thursday at the same place; I saw Brent and Debbie Quackenbush (Brent said 30 years since he’d been in the store.) Melissa their daughter and two younger generation, One was a busy little bee!

Well Friday A.M. reflecting on the first night of Countryfest Abrams high energy great fiddle playing. The banjo music stood out in the Washboard Union and the Harmony. Corb Lund Band was excellent country blend, his song writing of course, and the acoustic “Lazy 7” brought a tear or two. Life! And its challenges Kim and Kathy picked me up, the weather co-operated beautifully and that sunset sent a blessing down with its rays.

Mum and I went to Garden Shed for breakfast. Bev, Richard and their youngest daughter Laura and Carly were enjoying the morning. Carly is staying with them and working in Little Current.

The Canada 15 Girls brightened up the site of Countryfest. Told us to wear red and white, but it turned into a sea of blue, green, white and yellow raingear. The dyed in the wool Countryfest lovers are not deterred by a little dampness, thunder and lightening and water depth and mud! We lucked out with our/ my handicap sticker but the parking seemed iffy. Thanks Loretta, but the people and the campers and the wet, I’ll bet, tents! The entertainment was wonderful with the east coast roots Jessica Pearson Western Swing Authority was great (singing in the storm) Meghan Patrick lovely voice and style. Michelle Wright couldn’t believe it was 8/9 years. Dwight Yoakam, we got your moneys worth and more. What super back up musicians and busy stage hands, constantly changing the musical instruments?

I’ll bet all the girls were upset by Dwights long shirttail! It didn’t do his shimmy justice! Oh yes Kim and Kathy won free passes to next years Countryfest!

I liked all the music that didn’t drown out the singer’s voices. I guess I’m just an old country girl at heart (old being the definitive word!) Mikaila Cooper, Nicole Rayy and the Lovelocks great voices/songwriting, David James, Chris Buck Band, Crystal Shawanda. I didn’t know who Joe Nichols was until I heard the songs and I found I’d already been singing them. I liked his humble caring way! Love his voice. Good voice imitator too. Fireworks top notch! Congratulations KT, family and crew and all those volunteers! You done it again, thank you.

When I got home after Countryfest I found a note from Lance and Theresa (Mollie’s son) from Toronto area. So early this A.M. found me, Mum, Susan and Simon sharing a visit and breakfast at Garden Shed. A lovely surprise, and wonderful to see them, a year ago this day was Mum’s celebration at the hall for her 100th birthday and when we last saw Lance and Theresa here on the Island. After church I hurried to the ferry to give one more hug and to save money on stamps heading west. Well 2 bucks is 2 bucks!

Corrine travelled with me to church. She arrived last evening, meeting up with Pat Novak in London, and travelling together. Pat was there with Michelle for the birth of her first grandchild and spent some introductory/ bonding time with Marie.

Sympathy to the family of Bev Maguire, thinking of you all!

We went to Carol’s and Earl’s and sat with Mary Yett, Burt and Audrey Case. I checked with Mum, she didn’t want to go to Green Acres. Stopped at Cal’s, he refused too. So poor lonely me, well not for too long, Derek and Jodi, Tory, Amelia, great-grands Desmond and Declan. Pauline and Wayne, Sherry, Dave, Susan, Ray, Tara, Skylar a bit of family near each other camping. It’s such a beautiful spot, we were watching a Herring Gull dive for dinner, yes, and I stayed for dinner too! I drove to South Baymouth and again counted cars off and on the last ferry. Before I came home to write finish this long column, almost.

Don’t forget: Sunday, August 20, church at Fairview United, celebrating it’s 120th Anniversary, 11:30am. Pot luck at the Tehkummah Hall following the service.
