Tehkummah Talk & Times

My days are never without their feel-good moments, and surprises. A call today from Tom Collins (not the drink). I met him and his lovely family last year when the antique car club was here in our township. So many days are brighter because of folks I’ve met through my column or my poetry books. I’ve always felt so humbled when folks do remember me. Today an early start to the laundromat, started a good book I found there. Had breakfast at “Mum’s”, said hello to Donna Beadreau, who I hadn’t seen for ages. The other Tara has a new look with her haircut and glasses. I stopped at Bordie’s and had a visit and a cup of tea with Joan and him, was lovely. And bonus day with sun and warm temps, I sat out in the sun on the bench. Had to wade snow to get there, but things are looking up. Oh, I forgot my stop at Kat’s, she is always friendly, and she had the sweetest prettiest girl cat, nine months old, to find a home for. I could have taken her easily.

This week I opened a lovely note from Bev. She wouldn’t let me open it at church. Lovely words, an Angel, a turtle ornament and some cards for the sending, as I say.

Had a nice phone chat with niece Lori. Hey, isn’t this earth month? If we can find it below the snow!

Rick Mercer’s final show was so funny, his 15 years in review, a lot of laughs.

I had a milkshake with Sis Susan, my first probably in three or four years. She had had a bad week losing “Clyde,” her black goat. Bonnie is white, and they have been part of the backbone of their mini menagerie and the goats always walked (followed). Beauty and the black horse. It is so difficult to lose your pet. So sorry. Simon was in Toronto at the time.

Spring is springing, we had seven a half tables for cribbage. Lovely to have Doris back, another quick recovery on the second knee replacement. Some new players trying us out, and Keith Size was over to their place in Sandfield from Sudbury, was my partner for the day and we were doing really well too until we met up with the critter. Thanks to Mary and Margaret: Lori got the special high hand of 28, congrats; first, Graham and Sheila, 935; second, Donna and Hugh, 931; third, Margaret and Doris, 923; low, Gib and Florence, 826; door, Dorothy, Bob Q and Doris. The food was fabulous, thanks folks.

Thursday afternoon Sis Pauline opened her house for my U.C.W. Lynda Garniss and I provided lunch, only six of us. Thanks Pauline. We signed a card and gave a gift to Bev Lynch who is moving away soon! We are going to miss her and Richard. Lorna, our president, has a broken bone in her foot. Betty’s Eric had a fall on Wednesday and banged himself up pretty good. That darned ice.

We had a fun couple of hours on Wednesday mutilating books and shaping them into hedgehogs under Jan’s instructions at the library at their morning coffee time. A fun get together and brunch.

Five and a half tables for bid euchre Thursday afternoon. Next Thursday, evening regular euchre tournament at 7:30 pm; high, Hank, 216; second, Janet Dunn, 146; third, Hugh Corbett, 129; low, ?; 50/50, Doris Bayers; door, Marg Case; 2 extra prizes, Dave James and Anna Orford.

With a window of pebbled glass, it’s hard to see out today, yet the little birds are out there battling the ice and snow. So far, I’m warm and safe inside and the hydro is behaving. I didn’t have a good night, so I wasn’t planning on church anyway. But at about quarter after 11 I got a call from Lynda, they were just leaving Manitowaning and said the roads were terrible. Then I saw the brave Linda McNaughton stopped in front of my place scraping ice from her car windows and I yelled at her the info then worried that I hadn’t invited her in. I was surprised when she called me from her home, much sooner than I was going to try her. She went home on the Tenth. Smeltzers Road, she said, had an accident. She said her daughter Ellen had headed for her home in Toronto today. She had brought her big dog home for its burial. So sad to lose a pet.

I went to the Welcome Springtime fundraiser for our Knox Fairview and St. Andrews churches Saturday. The music was great, Robbie, Maurice, Doug and Debbie. Denise and her assistants put out a delicious meal, fed a full house.

Loretta tells me her daughter Patti had gone home from our Island with pneumonia, hope all is well by the time this comes out, and Jackie said Darlene Hardy too, wasn’t well.

Sherry and Susan took a painting class at the museum on Saturday. Haven’t seen the results yet.

Just talked to Martin on the phone. He said they had an awful trip home and they are without power (almost two hours home). Tara just phoned me, she had a 20 MPH trip home from Mindemoya but at least she’s home and safe, thank goodness. Call from Linda McNaughton, Ellen just made it home to Toronto (6:20 pm here).

Riley is checking out a new residence as of today, Sunday. He’s testing out Sherry and Dave’s. Bev and Richard moving soon.

Hydro just did an off thing.

I sometimes feel guilty walking away after eating dinner as I do/ did like to volunteer help but I was so glad to hear that Sherry went back in to help out on Saturday night!
