Sr. U.C.W. dinner out was at the Happy Moose on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. A nice meal with good friends: Borden and Joan, Pauline and Wayne, Bev and Richard, Audrie and Eileen, Rita, Lynda, Mom and I.
This is it—Countdown to Strawberry Social on Saturday, July 19 from 7 pm to 9 pm. Don’t miss it at the Tehkummah Hall.
When we drove in to Carol’s and Earl’s the other evening, a vehicle was stopped on the side of the road in South Baymouth and this cute baby fox was lying quietly on the rock right beside them!
My elderberry bush was shaking—a robin cleaning the berries up, interspersed her feeds with fat worms, she’d eat about half, and carry the rest away. As I watched, she did this three times. It’s almost like having cranberries with your turkey. There’s a nest in the maple tree right above where I sit, and just a few days ago the bunch in the birch left their nest. The little wren has her sauce on this morning; her kids must have left home! The American Redstart (surely it’s Canadian by now) is singing in the tree. Where oh where are the Monarch Butterflies?
Tuesday—Well our first progressive cribbage was very interesting starting with our start! We had it at the Tehkummah Hall, and dodged raindrops to get there! A few snacks appeared by magic. We had eight players and played six rounds. First place, Betty Jean, 714; second, Dorothy, 704; high hand, Melissa, 24; low, Melissa, 628; Rose won the door prize.
Wednesday. Thanks to Joy and Pat N. who provided lunch. We had two new couples join our cribbage players today. Welcome Anna and Hart and Theresa and Ed. Hope you enjoyed it. High hand, Theresa, 21; first place, Dorothy and Eugene, 956; second, Irene and Laura, 947; third, Edgar and Rita, 944; low, Ed and Theresa, 825; door prizes, Lori and Ed. There were five and a half tables.
Straight from cribbage to the Knox Church turkey dinner in Manitowaning where we got priority treatment thanks to ‘Norton-6,’ Irene, Laura, Mum, Cal, me and Pat. Thanks so much.
Cal and I drove to South Baymouth where we had a visit with Rod Pyette heading back home to Port Elgin. He was up checking on his dad and his mom Florence who is recovering from a fall.
I called Cal on Tuesday evening asking if I had contacted Meals on Wheels? Well the wheels were my own, a few minutes and I was at his door. Delicious potato salad, ham and boiled eggs. Sometimes it pays to act silly.
Thursday afternoon I just collapsed into my Layz girl chair. I’ll wait for a while before I make some lunch. This morning, Pat Falter came the long way around to take me to breakfast at the Garden Shed. We had a lovely visit. She tries to keep her Tehkummah semi-roots. How much more rooted can you be after living in the white schoolhouse? I weeded and moved stuff after I came home, planted beans in the empty spaces. Doesn’t take much to do me in! Pat has a summer place in Providence Bay Park.
Tehkummah euchre tournament winners on Thursday were: Rick Kempthorpe, 87, 5 lone hands; Rose McIntosh, 81, 5 lone hands; men’s low, Grant Hemming, 45; ladies’ low, Brenda Hemming. Margaret was on KP duty.
I’m extremely emotional this Sunday morning due to a few things here. Sympathy to the Gibbons family on their tragic loss. We will keep you in our prayers.
(At Susan and Simon’s gateway) I’m sure the cars passing us on the highway on Friday afternoon were thinking we were extremely ‘Red Neck Manitoulin Friendly.’ A group of us holding a welcome sign (signs) and colourful balloons. Texting (or whatever messaging) kept us informed as to where they were on the journey, and when Manitowaning was the clue, we got out on the side of the road. We were excited to see Michelle and her daughters Jordyn and Brooklyn. Mum and I hadn’t seen her since her wedding in 1999. Lance and Theresa, (her brother) and Bob and Carol (her dad) who made the trip possible (with all their help). Michelle has M.S. and is wheelchair bound. How lovely to see them all, even Mollie hadn’t seen her in person for two years. Believe me lots of photographs were taken! Visiting time and we all went to Carol’s and Earl’s for our supper (18 of us). Anita, Alicia and Samantha joined the welcoming and visiting group (Pauline and Wayne’s family). I couldn’t believe it was almost midnight when Mum and I got home. Bob and Lance, lifters and transporters. I can see Jordyn being a great help to her Mom. The girls are 12 and (almost) 10.
What’s wrong with this statement? The Family Brown wore ‘blue’? All in shirts marked with 50 years on the sleeves. The elder members or originals were also numbered in order of birth. How nice to see them all together. The family photos will be fabulous! A few hundred (I’m assuming) walked past the food corridor lineup of efficient burger and more makers. Enough food to feed an army. We were close to the end of the line. The end of the party Down Yonder band was rockin’ with Brown Family dancers and singers. Congratulations on your fiftieth anniversary! A terrific celebration! I was really impressed with fresh cut fries booth. I’m glad Frances insisted I have some. Delish! Lots of memories eh!
So great to speak to more names than I will remember there. I missed Leanne and Jeff (Crouch) last year. (They went to France.) Hello to Laverna and Anne. Met Mort McLelland. Did I spell it right? See everybody knows me? Had a little visit with Vivian who enjoyed the goings on from the seat of the truck. Martin and Lynda said their auction earlier in the day had gone well.
Today when we were seeing our gang off on the Chi-Cheemaun, Judy and Bob Blue were waving goodbye to their daughter Bobbi and granddaughter McKenna. Saw Bonnie Brown and her family heading out too. There was a great gang of us saying goodbye with sadness to Michelle, her girls and bodyguards. They are spending a few more days in Toronto before flying home to Winnipeg.
Sean, Paula, Sean, Brandon and Matthew are staying at Black Rock Lodge. They’re going to get a bit of fishing in. Wayne, Erica, Skyler and Callie are staying back at the camp for a few days. Anita and the girls stayed with Pauline and Wayne.
We have had the most amazing weekend. The total at Susan and Simon’s place on Saturday was thirty-seven. We had the rain scare while we were eating but the raindrops were elusive for all Saturday events. Sometimes Mother Nature does cooperate. Of course we did potluck and as always the food was just amazing, and family together more so. A time to keep in our book of memories. We did lots of generation and family photos.
Derek phoned this Sunday evening. He says they are surrounded by forest fires out there and 35¯ temperatures. Sounds scary. We must have talked an hour. Jodi is working two weeks away from McKenzie and two weeks home now.
Everett has spent the past week in the hospital at Mindemoya. Don Arnold too is spending a holiday there. Paul, glad you’re feeling better!
Burt and Elaine Bosje have his brother Henry and wife Judy visiting with them enjoying sightseeing and local events.
Morgan is in downtown Tehkummah!
This past week Mary has been working at the store while Ross and Susan are away.
David Sibbery went home to check on his Mom.
Boy the nights are sure wintery and the days are no ——! The thunder boomer gave us much needed rain, but then doesn?t the wind dry it all up again!
Kim phoned Monday evening bragging that his peas were waist high and they’d been picking them for a week already! Yum!
Thank you, thank you, Susan and Simon for all you do!
Book and bake sale at the Tehkummah Library on Saturday, July 19 starting at 9 am.
