Tehkummah Talk and Times

Saturday, June 28—28 degrees

Every second year the Pyette reunion is held (now) at the Tehkummah Hall. This year over 100 folk from all over Ontario, Ohio, Michigan, North Dakota, Minnesota and Florida. Registering, meet and greet after 1 pm on Saturday. There was lots of catching up to do. After the delicious chicken dinner (catered), the music began. This amazing and talented family livened the old hall up. Lots of great Rock and Roll, good music from the past, original compositions by a multi-talented 16-year-old musician/many great drums, guitars, mandolin. Jeff was the only local entertainer. Except for “All the way my Saviour leads me” in the morning session. This was in memory of mom Delores sung by Cricket, guitar and piano by her brother and sister (mandolin too). They rocked the gospel morning edition after breakfast at the hall. Since the last reunion two years ago lost from the family group was Art, Sherman and Eileen, Grace. This year recognized: Muriel was the oldest lady at 95; Ed was the oldest Gent at 89; and a three-month-old girl was the youngest. All the credit goes to Jill, Norris’ daughter, who organized the event. Games outside—kids’ games and enthusiastic dancers of all ages on the floor on Saturday evening. This group of multi-faceted, multi-talented Pyettes. Consisted of celebrities of all nature, photos and documents on the wall of Lester, who in October 2013 was inducted into the Newspaper Hall of Fame. Starting out as a sports writer for the Sault Star at age 17, his career spanned forty years working. Considered to be firm and fair. Recently, June 19, received his Doctorate from the Algoma University in a special ceremony. Another recognition coming up in September of this year for him. Also there was Cricket who was a backup singer for Trisha Yearwood (led gospel in AM), former NHL star Allan. Poets, songwriters, movie makers, actors and many, many famous folk, just because of their friendliness! Some handsome guys and some beautiful girls and adorable “good” youngsters. Did I cover them all? Kevin and Lisa volunteered to do the 2016 reunion!

Days come as days go, and so does time. Watched my great-grandson graduate from CMPS Tuesday evening. They had a super program. Marching in to Pomp and Circumstance. A large class led by teachers, Reeve, Board Members, etc. Mrs. Skippen emceed the program. Many speakers. Larry, I liked your message to the young grads. What a handsome bunch of young folk. Girls just lovely. Presentations to Grade 8 teacher, and principal (first ever) by the students. They also sang (rapped?) a specially written piece (a surprise for all). This graduating class will go far! Some wonderful food out for all. Many photos taken by many admiring family members. Beautifully decorated and interspaced with Words of Wisdom. I went up early and did my business of shopping and laundry. My timing was just perfect. Saw a nice fiery red deer on my way home, and Big Lake’s huge wild goose families slowed traffic. Good sized young goslings. So watch as you drive!

The flower gardens at the hall and the memorial garden were just lovely this spring. Thanks to the hardworking teams—Daisy and Robert, and Jeneen and Reuben. Daisy and Robert also put new flooring down in the cloakroom on Monday. Thanks for all you do! Many hardworking folk keep things up around there!

I forget to thank publicly the girls who so cheerfully fax my news columns out each week. Ross too when they are taking a day off (holiday).

A nice little overnight rain should soak my beans I just planted yesterday.

Cal is off to Sudbury this Tuesday morning. Needle in the eye day! Yeck!

Lori and Rick brought Jase home from St. Catharines for the summer.

Ken Anstice and daughter Isobel visited the Anstice family this past week. They were here from China.

Tehkummah Post Office is at South Baymouth for now, 705-859-3643. Anyone needing stamps or parcels mailed can go to South Baymouth Post Office. There is a meeting concerning the Post Office at the Tehkummah Community Hall on Friday at 11 am.

I hear John McNaughton is not well. Get well soon!

Busy spot here this Tuesday morning. Skylar is off on a Chi-Cheemaun adventure all excited with her classmates. Jacob graduates Grade 8 later today! Time is marching on.

Yesterday I still had a little chipmunk running underfoot. Hopefully it did make its escape and I don’t find/smell/remnants. I have an ornamental frog and toad sitting today out back. Monday a real toad slept the day away between them (no camera). I’m writing and soaking (me) at the same time.

Mollie has had two heart issues and hospital events this past few days. I would have thought she’d have had heart problems long ago. She’s always wound up! Hope they are soon resolved.

There was a nice crowd for bingo Monday night even though “Bob” wasn’t there. I “only” won one special!

“The elephant in the room” workshop at the Debajehmujig Centre on Thursday was excellent. I really enjoyed the seniors exercises with Derek Debassige. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but maybe? The time flew. Lunch break. Lots of information available. After lunch Al Boyd did his talk on scams. Not too long ago we had him talk at the Triangle Club. It was just as informative the second time around. The movie “Elders Gone AWOL” was funny and touching with lots of music. The day went fast. I sat with Mary, Mildred and Jackie. It was a good day. Loads of draws, loads of winners. Barb Flaherty won the coveted dinner cruise! There was some beautiful and unusual artwork on the walls. You should see it!

There were only four tables at cribbage on Wednesday but as always it was fun. The food as always was great. Pat N. brought sandwiches, Mum’s homemade donuts, Audrie had a fruit tray, I made open-faced bunwiches. Some folks had never had peanut butter and onion before! Two high hands of 24, Cal got them both! First, Irene and Laura, 959; second, Florence and Gib, 931; third, Eugene and Dorothy, 908; low, Audrie and Melissa, 852; door, Edgar (pulled his own).

At euchre on Thursday there were four and three quarters tables. Mary Johnston and Dorothy were on lunch detail. Ladies’ high, Rose, 76 and 6 lone hands; ladies’ low (almost me), Mary Ann beat me by one, 47; men’s high, Andy, 81; men’s lone hands, 5, Don Bricker; men’s low, Irene, 50; door prize, Mary Ann.

June McDougall left on the ferry today after the church service at Fairview in Tehkummah. She had her dog Samson with her. (Sounds like a guard dog’s name?) She will be home in London for the next month.

Just Joan and Borden, Mum and I for lunch at Carol’s and Earl’s today. I guess Amanda’s wedding was beautiful last weekend. Congratulations to the newlyweds! Said hello to Debbie and Graham at the restaurant.

Saturday morning, for the first time ever, I missed the goings on in South Baymouth’s Canada Day event. No yard sale, no hamburgers, no museum or bake sale and no parade. They always have the best! I was recuperating from what I don’t know. Later I took in the Pyette reunion. The flower baskets hanging on the poles in South Baymouth are gorgeous this year!

Gib and Florence had their son Rod, Rosa and grandchildren Rochelle and Cole staying with them. They all took in the Pyette reunion. On Monday, Anita, Faith and Anna will be joining the family. Hope you’re feeling better Florence.

Steve and Gail are spending time with his Mom and Dad. They fished at Meldrum Bay on Saturday. They were at Susan and Simon’s on Sunday evening for a spaghetti dinner and strawberry shortcake. I brought Mum home at midnight. We played Tiki and Gail and I won! I took time out and beat Cal at cribbage earlier in the day. I whomped Mum good! A good day all around!

Laurene told me this morning of Elgin Martin’s passing. Such a kind and gentle man. Sympathy to the family.
