Tehkummah News & Notes

Kevin and Brianna Gilbert stopped to say hello. They were meeting Lisa, who was coming on the ferry last Friday.

Here it is Thanksgiving weekend and Marg Reckham just arrived at her son’s home. We sat and visited in the lovely sunshine. Bob and Valerie Brill came across from the store, said we were creating a disturbance in downtown Tehkummah! They were heading to their Windfall Lake home for the last weekend of summer?

My gosh, it takes the moon a long time to come from South Baymouth to Tehkummah. It’s just lighting up my yard now, 9:30 pm, and I saw it rising above the trees as the Cheech left port. There was even a girl standing on a picnic table to take photos of that orange orb! 100 cars/pieces off, 42 cars/pieces on. Just had a cup of tea with the neighbours. Dave was visiting there too.

Saturday evening met a nice lady who is interested in settling here, sounds like she loves the Island.

Stopped at Mum’s, a four-handed crib game on with Simon and Dorothy against winners Mum and Lori. Simon left, and I sat in. Each team got a skunk five games later, Dorothy and I the champions.

The deer hunters won’t have to go too far for the game, as Friday night one was walking in Ward’s driveway, probably eating our wind fallen apples, and then on Sunday evening.

I just about got run over by a reindeer in my own backyard! (re: song) Sunday, I think. I took a drive into Michael’s Bay. I was going to pick the rosehips, for jelly at the old restaurant, but the birds, or time, had beat me to it. Speaking of “thyme,” I picked a bit of it though. Scattered wild flower seeds on my travels that day, met a couple of salmon/ rainbow? watchers, Doug and Kim, such lovely weather, and gorgeous scenery. Shorts weather on Thanksgiving Monday. Marg sat out with me in the morning, 10 at Tara and Ray’s for the great turkey dinner. Sherry back from her (their) trip to Cancun. Travis and Alicia are here from Gore Bay. We were having a great visit. Cal came along, and he had had his Thanksgiving dinner with Lyle and Shirley’s family.

We got an emergency call to go to bingo, they needed players, so Tara and I rescued them. We both won enough to pay our way, so that was OK, cause I had to borrow. I was so beat when it was time to leave the place, I couldn’t get off the chair. How embarrassing is that. Niece Lori gave me a hoist. Poor kid, I should call to see if her back’s OK. My bones are getting worse!

Hostile territory on Manitoulin ferry dock as things drone along?

Three tables for bid  euchre, and an awful lot of fun! Winner, Janet and Glenn?; low, Laurene; door prize, Glenn.

The “what ifs” of life was the topic of our Sunday sermon. He touched on this and why do we always rethink after the facts, because we can’t change a single thing? Are all our minds the same? I had good timing Tuesday evening going into Tara and Ray’s just in time for leftover turkey/ham dinner. They say timing is everything!

Eight tables for cribbage, great lunch, we had an amazing seven “24” hands. Georgina had two, Lorrie, Graham, Sandra, Roger and myself. First, Donna and Janet, 948; second, Bill and Betty Jean, 941; third, Bill McG. and Mary J., 925; low, Hugh and Lyla, 776; door, Noreen, Roger and Marg McG.

Cal and I went to Carol’s and Earl’s for a bowl of soup.

When I came home from Sandfield euchre, Mum’s outside light was on and I got a real shock when I couldn’t find her. Bill Case had said he’d seen the ambulance go by while he was playing cards. Sure enough I knocked on Dorothy’s door and she had gone for a ride. I found a note from Susan; she had a dizzy spell, came home the same night though.

Sandfield euchre (last of the season) ladies’ high and lone hand, Sue; ladies’ low, Florence, 42; men’s high, Gib, 81; lone hands’, Dave (J.); low, Raymond. Oh yeah, Bill and I got skunked; lunch, Sharon and Janice.

Euchre, Floyd and Mary “lunch” Jeneen cakes; men’s high, Simon, 69; men’s lone hands, Mark, 3; men’s low, Andy, 50; ladies’ high, Tina, 87; ladies’ lone hands, 3; ladies’ low, Linda, 55; door prize, Linda.

Mum had lots of visitors at her door today. Dorothy, Lori, Rick, Bev, Richard, Betty. Family Susan, Simon, Pauline, Sherry, Tara. Two calls from her niece and nephew in B.C. and from Paula in Ottawa.

A delicious lemon pie came to Mum’s door, and an apple pie from the home farm. Guess what? I tried them both (yum). Thanks, Betty Russell and Shirley Sagle.

A trip to Mindemoya found me visiting with Mame Murray at the laundromat. She is looking really well. I don’t see her too often. Adrien’s home, she says.

Well, Dorothy beat me three straight at Mum’s Friday evening while Mum was napping.

Susan spent Thanksgiving in Ottawa. Pauline and Wayne’s visitors were Dave and Christine.

Pattison’s yard was active. Retirement? Birthday? Holiday? A get-together, house warming maybe?

Ooopss! Susan left her sun roof open Saturday night. It was a bit wet? When she and Paula left Mum’s. Anita, Alicia and Sammy are here for the weekend. Anita stayed with Mum overnight.

Kim and Kathy phoned, woke me up around nine. I was in bed before nine last night. Despite the country music at the Hall. I would have liked to go, but I was so tired. Church sermon was “Extravagant Love.” At Mum’s for a bit, Mickey (Simon’s daughter) and Pauline are there. Cal comes along and we go and watch the closing of South Baymouth for the season. The ferry Chi-Cheemaun did double salutes on her last crossing (I’m sure it was bumpy) of the year! Peg and Glen from Guelph had been to a proven winners plant perennial seminar in Michigan, touring amazing gardens and preparation and cataloging mailing, packaging. Stopped in to visit Mum. Staying with Susan and Simon.
