It’s time for cheerleading not establishing the event
To the Expositor:
Municipalities support their communities in a myriad of ways; least of which is their backing of desirable community events. From offering support services like administration, garbage, signage, advertising and crowd control to physical services like buildings, parks, docks and restrooms, our little municipalities carry a big load.
Important events in the community often come our way because a municipality has sponsored its start-up. Too often the staff and councillors, who dedicate themselves to ensuring success, are forgotten in our gratitude. Let’s take a moment to applaud their efforts.
When a community event proves to be profitable, the municipality’s role changes—from champion to cheerleader. The financial support initially needed to ensure success is reduced. Other municipal assets will likely still be needed; sometimes for free and sometimes at a charge; the value of these non-cash donations can be considerable.
Local businesses, realizing they too benefit from these events, will often step in and contribute; as they should. We thank them too.
No club, business or person sticking their hand out for a municipal donation should take it as a “given.” Staff members need time to assess applications in a fair and unbiased manner. Careful scrutiny of each request yields better information. That translates into better decisions for the community at large. Gone are the days of favouritism and cronyism—we hope!
Summer is here and the Island is hopping with countless community events, all brought to you by the citizens, volunteers and local governments of our beautiful Mnidoo Mnising. Make sure you get out and enjoy!
