Bradley Stapleton stands proud atop his Manitoulin Chrysler-sponsored Smash-up Derby entry as overall winner, having vanquished second place winner Matthew Noland in the final clash. David Borton won the Best Spray Painted Award, while Steven Varey won the Best Hand Painted Award. Held on Sunday afternoon, the signature event of Manitowaning’s Southeast Manitoulin Lions Club Summerfest Weekend attracted over a whopping 900 spectators this year. photo by Giovanni Capriotti Some cool Freezies were a welcome way to beat the rare summer heat during the annual Summerfest Parade. Miss Manitoulin Hope Gulyas had a broad smile as she rode in style through the Summerfest Parade. It takes a lot of willing hands to make the weekend a success. Horse pull winner Gerald Webkamigad’s team pulled a hefty 6,500 pounds for the win. Second place went to Kevin Gilbert of Purple Valley’s team. Nothing says summer quite like a free hot dog! Assiginack Deputy Fire Chief Brian Lafleur was kept busy handing out the delicious treats before and after the parade. Sausages, iced tea, a dinosaur T-shirt and a rocking cool hat. Summerfest fun just doesn’t get any better than this. Painting up a face. Getting your face painted is a popular summer festival pastime. Summerfest coordinator Lion Lisa Halleart was ready for a little kids’ game boxing. Jousting for top bragging rights, entries from across Manitoulin have made the Smash-up Derby a definite crowd pleasing favourite.
