‘Stopping beyond Stereotypes’ is Down Syndrome campaign theme

TEHKUMMAH—On Saturday, June 15, hundreds of people gathered at local ambassador events across Canada for the Down Syndrome Walk, a national fundraiser in support of life-changing programs for Canadians with Down syndrome.

This year, the theme of the Walk was ‘Stepping Beyond Stereotypes.’ Following the viral campaign ‘Assume That I Can,’ the Canadian Down Syndrome Society is encouraging supporters to help end the assumptions that limit the lives of people with Down syndrome.

Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS) Walk Ambassadors Ashley and Lyla Bowerman along with their family hosted their second Barbecue and Dance Party held at the Mom and Tot’s Park in Tehkummah. Approximately 60 people attended for a cash barbecue lunch and enjoyed a beautiful sunny day that included music, bubbles, cupcakes and some playground fun. Team Love for Lyla raised $1,785 for the CDSS.

Local events were followed by a nationwide virtual celebration with celebrity co-host Madison Tevlin, star of ‘Assume That I Can,’ which can be viewed on the CDSS’s social media pages.

The walk ensures that resources and programs are available to thousands of people with Down syndrome and their caregivers, at no cost.
