Steel and aluminum tariffs must be met with appropriate countermeasures, says MP

ELLIOT LAKE—Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing says that US steel and aluminum tariffs must be met with appropriate counter measures.

US President Donald Trump’s “senseless decision to apply tariffs on steel and aluminum is going to hurt Canadians, and must be met with immediate retaliation,” said MP Hughes. “Workers at Algoma Steel (in Sault Ste. Marie) know how important our integrated economies are, and the federal government must respond immediately.”
“First, workers must be protected. It’s urgent that impacted workers get financial support if these tariffs impact their livelihoods,” said MP Hughes. “Second, our government must respond with dollar-for-dollar tariffs of our own to show Trump what Canadian resolve looks like. Those tariffs should also directly harm those that are seeking to hurt us, including 100 percent tariff on Elon Musk’s Teslas.”

“Third, we need to ensure that all Canadian procurement uses Canadian-made steel and aluminum to help ensure we protect Canadian jobs from tariff threats,” continued MP Hughes.

MP Hughes added, “Canadians are united. We are strong. And we will not let anyone threaten our economy, our values or our sovereignty.”
