GORE BAY—A Gore Bay business is holding a fundraiser this Saturday, April 2 for the people of war-torn Ukraine.
“It’s just a matter of wanting to do something to help out the people and country of Ukraine and the level of humanitarian hardship the people in Ukraine are facing,” said Barb Erskine, acting manager of Split Rail Brewing Company.
“So many people have left Ukraine and I am sure everyone on Manitoulin Island would like to lend a hand where they can to help the Ukraine people,” said Ms. Erskine. “All we at Split Rail are doing is creating a meeting space for people to come out, which has been difficult the past two years with the pandemic, and allow them a social opportunity and to support a really good cause.”
Ms. Erskine explained that what is being planned is for sausage on a bun to be available for those on hand, with proceeds from food sales and $1 from every draft beer or soda sold at the event will go to the Canadian Red Cross relief fund for Ukraine.
“If someone just wants to attend to make a donation, we will have a cash box available or they can pay by other means,” said Ms. Erskine. “And for anyone who makes a donation of $20 or more, we will take their information down on a Red Cross pledge form so they can receive a tax receipt.”
“The whole idea of this fundraiser is to have an event where people have the opportunity to express their support and generosity to the many people who are in trouble in another part of the world,” added Ms. Erskine.
The fundraising event for Ukraine will take place at Split Rail in Gore Bay from 12 noon to 5 pm on Saturday.
