Some thoughts on making health care more effective

In the end it all comes down to money

To the Expositor:

How can Canada make health care more effective?

Each Canadian citizen has entered the doors of a doctor’s office, hospital and has had to tolerate the long waits to get medical care. One way to make health care more effective is by having shorter waits and more staffing to care for the needs of Canadian citizens. This involves more tax dollars being put into health care instead of being put into military and international trade. There needs to be more incentive for people to train in health care instead of depleting jobs.

Health care can be more effective by moving towards center community-based care and creating a system that reduces waste and maximizes quality of care. By acknowledging the gaps in continuing care of patients being discharged from hospitals too early when their care is complex and needs more attention. Providing the right services to patients after being released from hospital will reduce the cost of emergency visits and hospital readmission.

Canadian government needs to support safe, cost effective use of drugs that are prescribed to patients. Some people have minimal access to drug benefit plans and need to pay for the drugs themselves. Many drugs are being ordered from doctors and discontinued which increases the cost and waste.

Another way to make health care more effective is promoting and protecting the health of Canadians by putting in programs that help people to focuses on good health behaviour.

Receiving health care in the North is difficult due to the lack of infrastructure and remote communities which increases cost to individuals seeking health care. By having more resources provided by the government will make access to health care easier. Funding health care research and clinical trials will increase our knowledge on diseases and aid us in treating the diseases. In the end, it all comes down to money and how much of our tax dollars are going towards the health care sector and also how much the government is looking into funding the health care system.
