SHESHEGWANING—The Sheshegwaning First Nation held its annual powwow this past weekend with a large number of dancers and visitors joining in the festivities.
“We would like to welcome everyone to our 27th annual powwow,” stated Sheshegwaning Chief Alana Endanawas following the grand entry of the powwow Saturday. “We hope that you will enjoy cultivating the rich tradition of our heritage and culture and all the enjoyment of the powwow this weekend.”
Despite less-than-ideal conditions for the weekend with lots of rain having fallen (especially Saturday) it did not deter a large crowd of dancers on hand, several drums, great food, plenty of vendors and much more.
As master of ceremonies Joey Laford Jr. stated Saturday, despite the inclement weather, “We will still have the best powwow Sheshegwaning has ever had.”
“No matter what the weather is doing, I am seeing a lot of smiling faces today,” said Mr. Laford.
The head dancers for the weekend were Justin Antoine and Shawnee Jacko, with the head veteran being Will Morin. There were several drums on hand including the host drum Island Boys, co-host drum Red River, and Spirit Bear.
There were several vendors on hand selling their wares or selling delicious food. There was breakfast available for all those in attendance on both days, provided by the powwow organizing committee.
The theme for this year’s powwow was “We Will Always Stand Strong.”
