Sgt. Charles A Golden Silver Star Memorial Rifle Team shoots in Gore Bay

GORE BAY—The Sgt. Charles A. Golden Silver Star Memorial Rifle Team has become a familiar sight at Island Remembrance commemorations and celebrations of Island veterans, but much of their work is undertaken largely out of sight at Manitoulin’s cemeteries. The rifle team has undertaken to shoot an honorary 21-gun salute over the grave of every veteran buried on the Island.

On Monday, July 15, the Sgt Charles A. Golden Silver Star Memorial Rifle Team preformed an honour salute for the following veterans in memory of their service to their country: Marvin Woods (navy), Fred Woods (navy), Stanley (Pete) Woods (army), Roy Baxter (navy), Grant Williams (merchant marines), William (Bill) Porter (army) and Ronald McQuarrie (air force).

The rifle team also preformed a salute for David Parker (British army), a Gore Bay resident who was most recently a resident of Manitoulin Centennial Manor.

Wayne Golden, founder of the rifle team, lays out an invitation to any family on Manitoulin whose relative is buried here and who has served his country (any country) in a military capacity, to get in touch with the team and arrange for an honour salute to be fired over their graves. Contact either the Gore Bay or Little Current branches of the Royal Canadian Legion or any member of the Manitoulin North Shore ANAVETS to connect with the team.
