Several Manitoulin Island firefighters receive pump operator certification

MANITOULIN—Central Manitoulin Fire Chief Phil Gosse has nothing but praise for a group of four Island volunteer firefighters who have made firefighting services on the Island stronger by having completed their pump operator course.

“All of this makes the Island firefighting services stronger,” stated Mr. Gosse. “The four firefighters did a fabulous job by taking the training session through the Ontario Fire Marshals Office.”

The four firefighters included Alan Lewis, Allan Davy and Chris Noland, all firefighters in Central Manitoulin, along with Lori Gordon of the Tehkummah Township fire department. “They all took their pump operator course and have now received their certification.”

“They just completed the course and all four students passed, with all of them receiving passing marks in the 80-90 percent range,” said Mr. Gosse.

The course was run over two weekends, June 16-18, and the weekend of July 7-9. Mike Mowat and Mark Parliament of the Ontario Fire College put on the course, held in Central Manitoulin.

“It was a lot of work for these students,” said Mr. Gosse. “Each student had to undertake 40 hours of pre-class online work and had to pass. Then they took the course over six days, in class training, in Mindemoya. There was a lot of work, reading and numbers work and all passed with flying colours. Welcome to the new members of the team making Island firefighting services stronger and for all the hard work they put in to become certified in this course.”
