M’CHIGEENG—Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs technological skills students posted fantastic results and brought home seven medals at the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB)-wide regional competition held last week.
“We had a total of nine students competing, and they garnered seven medals in the board-wide regional competition held at Cambrian College and at the Carpenters Union Hall in Azilda,” said Steve Robinson, technology teacher at MSS.
Mr. Robinson explained that “Alex Dawson received a gold medal in cabinet making; Jasen Millette got a gold medal in small powered equipment; C.J. Wilson (garnered) a silver medal in auto service technology. The MSS team of Parker Hall, Sean Orford, Wyatt Dearing and Caleb Byers were awarded a bronze medal in the team of four carpentry competition.” He added as well, “still to compete is Tyson Otosquaiob in prepared speech.”
RDSB hosted its 14th annual technological skills competition on February 27. More than 100 secondary school students tested their skills in events including carpentry, welding, TV/video editing, photography, auto-service technology, 2D and 3D character animation, electrical installations, cabinet making and small powered equipment, prepared speech, auto computer aided design (CAD), mechanical CAD and coding. Students were vying for the opportunity to compete at the Skills Ontario competition from May 6 to 8 in Toronto.
“Events in the skilled trades give students an opportunity to problem solve, think creatively and explore career opportunities at an early age,” said Dana Kinsella, Specialist High Skills Major and Ontario youth apprenticeship program co-ordinator at RDSB. “Reaching minds through innovative and challenging learning experiences and touching hearts by engaging students in activities that fuel their passion supports student success.”
“Competition continues in the first week of May in Toronto at the provincial level for the gold medal winners,” said Mr. Robinson.
