MANITOULIN – Members of the Manitoulin OPP will be visible to motorists and all-terrain vehicles this Thanksgiving Day long weekend.

As the Fall Seatbelt Campaign comes to an end on October 9, 2015, Operation Impact a national program which raises public’s awareness to the issues on our highways becomes a focus for police. Operation Impact focuses on Distracted Driving, Aggressive Driving, Seatbelt Use, and Impaired Driving.

Every person that sits behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle has a responsibility to ensure that he or she and its passengers arrive to their destination safely. The OPP continues to target those who put the wellbeing of others at risk by operating motor vehicles in violation of provincial and federal legislation. That is why the Ontario Provincial Police will be visible this long weekend educating motorists on traffic laws. “The police cannot do it alone we need the public’s assistance to end the carnage and heartbreak that result from these preventable tragedies, let’s work together you do your part and the we will do ours to make the roads and highways safer ” says Staff/Sergeant Kevin Webb Detachment Commander of the Manitoulin OPP.

The public is reminded that arriving safely at your destination is no “accident”. Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVC) happen for a reason and motorists should take the necessary steps and make the right choices to arrive alive.

These choices include:

  • Operating a motor vehicle in a sober state
  • Wearing seatbelts properly and at all times while in motion
  • Obeying the posted speed limits and following at a safe distance
  • Using only hands-free communication devices while operating a motor vehicle

Recreational activities this long weekend will undoubtedly include motorists utilizing the thousands of kilometers of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) trails in Ontario. The OPP will be conducting patrols to ensure everyone’s safety. Sober operation of ATV’s, wearing of helmets, and responsible driving behaviour is the order of the day.

Motorists are encouraged to call 911 if they suspect someone is impaired by alcohol, drug, or even fatigue”.

Let’s do our part to ensure a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend!
