CHELMSFORD—Golfer Ryan Willoughby kept things in the family as far as setting the course record for the Chelmsford Golf Course recently. Mr. Willoughby actually set a new mark last year but broke his own record recently. The previous record had been held by his father, Lloyd, who is a seasonal resident of Mindemoya.
“It was pretty cool,” stated Mr. Willoughby in explaining that he posted a nine under par score of 63 on August 16. “My dad and I shared the record of 65 for a long time and then last summer I shot 64.”
Lloyd Willoughby had previously owned the course record of 65, a score he posted at the golf course in 2003.
“When I came back to Chelmsford from university, I tied the record of 65, playing different tees,” said Ryan Willoughby. For his course record a couple of weeks ago, he started on the 10th hole and finished the first nine holes with a score of 32 (with five birdies and a bogey). On the second nine he notched five birdies and finished with a 31.
As previously reported by The Expositor, Mr. Willoughby was one of 32 new inductees into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame on May 1. He spent his summers as a youngster on Manitoulin Island, as his parents have a home in Mindemoya, and he would play all three courses on the Island.
