Ron Wakegijig’s death was a big loss

To the Expositor:

On behalf of the Wakegijig family, I wish to take this opportunity to thank The Expositor for the stories about our father, Chief Ron Wakegijig, over the years.

Ron’s death on May 5, 2011 was a huge loss on so many levels. We lost one of the most fluent speakers of the Odawa language, an unrivaled historian of Manitoulin Island history, an accomplished musician, a strong leader and advocate of First Nation rights, a gifted healer, and most of all, our Dad.

I wish to thank all of those who came to pay their respects and to share some of the stories of how our father affected their lives. It has been a comfort to know he made a difference to you.

The tremendous support we received from so many people (you know who you are) is a kindness that we shall not soon forget!
