River School is in session, 4elements hosts kid and adult programs

by Sharon Jackson

KAGAWONG—4e is thrilled to announce a full-fledged River School program thanks to funding from The Ontario Trillium Foundation.

“We’ve partnered with Manitoulin Streams to deliver a series of summer programs for kids and adults (short and long sessions) along the Kagawong River,” shared Sophie Edwards, executive director of 4elements Living Arts.

“Each program will be jam packed with integrated art-science activities and river exploration, specifically tailored to the age group.” Ms. Edwards continued. “You or your child will learn in a holistic way that integrates embodied, hands-on scientific learning with creative expression and art and come away from the program looking at the Kagwong River and its watershed in a new way; feeling connected to the place you call home. Also, it’s going to be a truck load of creative fun! Check our program page for the details.”

“We had such an overwhelming response to last summer’s pilot program that we’re revamping, re-launching and expanding the program to include a one week intensive for kids aged 4-6, four half-day sessions for kids 4-9, and two adult programs.”

Some of the adult programs include watershed photo-documentation, riparian reveries: plants, roots and invertebrates; and sound ecologies.

Kids will learn about riverbed and substrate exploration, plant and animal life of the Kagawong River, water flow, and riffing on the riparian and River: the art and science of river ecology.

Each kids’ session includes a mix of river science and art-making, led by experts and professional art educators. Kids spend a fun filled day outdoors along the river. In the event of heavy rain an alternate indoor program will be offered.

Each adult workshop is facilitated by a team of local experts and highly experienced arts educators. Guest experts compliment the program’s activities.
