Ministry seek’s public’s help in illegal shooting of deer

MANITOULIN—The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is seeking the public’s help in identifying the individuals responsible for illegally shooting a deer on Manitoulin Island.

Conservation officers received a tip on December 4 about a single gunshot on the Arda property off Pleasant Valley Road at 3:30 pm. A car then picked up an individual at that location at 5 pm.

Conservation officers investigated the area on the evening of December 4 but found nothing. On returning to the location the next morning, they discovered blood on the road and a drag mark coming from the Arda property, leading them to believe that the deer was retrieved overnight.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also call the ministry’s Sudbury district office during regular business hours at 705-564-7823.

Rainbow Board and CUPE reach tentative local agreement

SUDBURY—The Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) and the  union representing its cleaners, custodians and trades employees in Sudbury, Espanola, Manitoulin Island and Shining Tree have reached a tentative agreement at the local level.

Details of the agreement will be released once it has been ratified by members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 895 and approved by the RDSB board of trustees.

The new deal, if ratified and approved, will be in effect from September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2017, aligning with the provincial settlement for this employee group at the central bargaining table.

“Our CUPE staff keep our schools clean and safe,” said RDSB chair Doreen Dewar. “They maintain quality facilities for teaching and learning.”

Ms. Dewar said, “we commend the bargaining team from the board and the union for working diligently to bring these  negotiations to a successful conclusion.”
