RIDE check results in impaired charge

On Friday, December 4 at 11:45 pm, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Enforcement) stop check at the intersection of Bidwell and Rockville Roads in NEMI Township. A red Ford Explorer truck approached the check and upon seeing the emergency lights stopped and attempted to turn around. The officer intercepted the vehicle and talking with the driver a strong odour of alcohol was detected. Further investigation reveals the driver was on a recognizance from court to abide by a curfew and non-consumption of alcohol.

As a result of this investigation, the driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old male of Wikemikong First Nation, has been arrested and charged with the following offenses: impaired driving, having care or control over 80 milligrams of alcohol and breach of recognizance (two counts), all contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was held in custody pending an appearance in Ontario Bail Court on Monday, December 7 in Gore Bay.
