RICHARD CHARLES DRAKE

Richard Charles Drake, 81, of Rockville Road, Manitoulin Island, passed away on October 30, 2023. Richard, fondly known as Rick, was born to Julia and Charles Drake, on March 13, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio. After high school he enlisted with the United States Navy and witnessed many historical events including the retrieval of Commander Alan Sheppard in Freedom 7 and blocking Russian supply ships bound for Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After an Honorable Discharge he married the love of his life, Patricia Drake in 1970 and purchased property on Manitoulin Island where they operated Duck’n Drake Marine & Cottages for over 50 years. He was a talented mechanic with a passion for antique outboards and cars. He loved his family, friends, cooking, reading, nature, fishing and spending time outdoors. Richard is survived by his two children, Mark Drake and Natalie Drake; his four grandchildren, Marina, Alexandra, Carley and Brooke. He is also survived by his sister Pat Lawton and brother Gene Drake. Richard was predeceased by his wife, Patricia, his parents, Julia and Charles, and his brother, Michael Drake. Aside from his love of anything mechanical he was a member of the
Antique Outboarder Association, passionate about the preservation of Lake Manitou and a member of the Lake Manitou Area Association. He loved teaching his grandkids how to operate boats, taking them kneeboarding/tubing behind his boat or for wagon rides behind his tractor. His wisdom, guidance and compassion will be truly missed. Rick’s family will host a small service on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 2 pm. The service will be at 2596 Rockville Road in Mindemoya.
