Rainfall warning for Manitoulin Island

40 to 60 millimetres of rain today into tonight.

A large low pressure system originating from Texas will track towards the Central Great Lakes today. Rain at times heavy is expected to begin this morning across the district and continue through Friday. Over some locales, a brief period of freezing rain may occur at the start of the precipitation, but should rapidly change to rain as temperatures rise above freezing.

Current indications suggest a general rainfall of 50 to 80 millimetres across the warned regions by Friday afternoon, with the highest amounts expected across North Bay, Sudbury, Manitoulin and New Liskeard. Thunderstorms are also likely. Regions that receive several thunderstorms may see even higher amounts.

For the Gogama region, temperatures across the southern portions of the region will be above zero but over northern sections are expected to be below zero tonight. For this reason, a freezing rain warning is also in effect for the northern sections.

The rain is expected to taper off during the day Friday as the low pressure system pulls away into Quebec.
