SUDBURY–For the past three months, students and staff in selected Rainbow Schools have learned the basics of barbershop singing in preparation for their performances in Sudbury’s very first a cappella music festival.
The festival will take place on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 2 pm at Sudbury Secondary School’s newly renovated Sheridan Auditorium.
Five Rainbow Schools will take to the stage – Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, Manitoulin Secondary School, Monetville Public School, R.H. Murray Public School and Walden Public School.
Volunteers from Nickel City Sound have worked with the school groups to teach them to sing in four-part harmony. Each group will sing one song, and, together with Nickel City Sound, will perform “When I Sing” as the grand finale.
The “When I Sing” music festival is a community project organized by two groups: Nickel City Sound and the Human League Association. The festival enriches community spirit and fosters health and wellness through the gift of music.
“We are proud to participate in this collaborative festival,” says Rainbow District School Board Director of Education, Norm Blaseg. “This is a great opportunity to bring people together to celebrate. We commend the many volunteers who worked with our schools to share their enthusiasm and talent for barbershop singing. It promises to be a fun event.”
Admission is $10 per person or $25 per family. Proceeds will benefit the Human League, Nickel City Sound and future festivals. For tickets, call 705-670-8633. There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door.
The “When I Sing” project garnered a 2014 Healthy Community Recognition Award from Greater Sudbury’s Healthy Community Cabinet.
