Rainbow District School Board approves 2023-2024 school year calendar

SUDBURY—The Rainbow District School Board (RDSB), The Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon (CSC Nouvelon), Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCSDB) and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord have approved the school year calendar for 2023-2024.

The four school boards have worked together to produce a common calendar for many years, facilitating the co-ordination of services such as student transportation. Each board adopted the calendar following its own consultation process. The calendar will now be submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Education for final approval.

The 2023-20-24 school year calendar will be the same for all English and French-language schools in Greater Sudbury, Espanola, Manitoulin Island and Sudbury East (including Warren, Markstay, Noelville, St. Charles and Killarney). The calendar will also apply to CSC Nouvelon and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord schools.

The school year for students will begin on Wednesday, September 6, following the Labour Day weekend. There will be no early dismissal. The day after the Labour Day weekend, Tuesday, September 5, is a professional activity day.

In addition to the first day of school, the calendar includes the dates for the Christmas break, the March break, statutory holidays, secondary school examination days and professional activity days in 2023-2024.

The Thanksgiving holiday is October 9, Christmas break is from December 25 to January 5, 2024. The Family Day holiday takes place February 19, while a board designated holiday is on March 8, and the mid-winter break which will take place March 11-15. Good Friday is March 29, with the Easter Monday holiday being April 1. The Victoria Day holiday is May 20 while the last day for students will be June 28.

For secondary school students the first semester will run from September 6 to February 1 and the second semester is from February 2 to June 28.

Examination days for secondary school students will take place over five days apiece, from January 26 to February 1 and from June 24-28.

There are seven days that have been set aside for professional development activities held during the 2023-2024 school year. For the Sudbury/Espanola/Manitoulin districts they will take place September 1, 5 and 29, November 10, February 2, April 19 and June 10.
