We had some sure signs of spring and many people were hopeful when March began with unseasonably warm days and the maple trees started dripping. Even the Canada geese, the ducks and the seagulls were fooled and returned to the area just in time for a big snowfall and dropping temperatures. We’ll have to pay attention and watch to see if March really does come in like a lamb and leave like a lion.

The Men’s Bonspiel was held last weekend and the village was bustling with lots of people, everyone had a fantastic time, lots of food and beverages for all the spectators and participants. We will supply you with the results in next week’s paper.

Lyle Dewar hooked up his new team of horses to bring out the Twilight Seniors Club for a sleigh ride across his beautiful four-level farm on Saturday, March 10. It was a beautiful sunny day and a good time was had by all. He even extended the invitation to the writers of our Providence Bay News and Notes to show his and Sharon’s appreciation for our work. Thanks to you both, we really enjoyed our ride through your beautiful property.

We’re glad to hear that Irene Cornish is doing well after her recent scare requiring visits to Sudbury for testing to ensure that she’s in the best health possible. Just in time to celebrate a birthday on March 11. Happy belated birthday, Irene.

The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club is aiming to continue their endless fundraising and hard work to ensure the beautification of our little village. They have started a Go Fund Me Account at www.gofundme.com called Lions Club Beautification Project hoping to raise $3,500 to purchase more banners for the hydro poles lining our streets. If you can help out in any way, it would be wonderful if we could just get a few more each year until our streets reflect the pride that we all have in our community.

One of the beneficiaries of the fundraising efforts done by the Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club is the youth and citizens of Providence Bay for free public skating every day during March Break from Monday, March 12 to Friday, March 16 every day from 1-3 pm. Come on out for the rest of the week and lace up to get some exercise.

The annual Dewar Family Sugar Shack Syrup Auction to benefit the Health Sciences North Northern Cancer Foundation is online again. The deadline for bidding is Thursday, March 15 at 7 pm sharp. The Municipality of Central Manitoulin is looking for energetic and enthusiastic students to fill summer job opportunities including positions in Providence Bay. There are opportunities for the Summer Fun Program – Leader and Assistant as well as Interpretive Centre Host positions for the summer holidays. The deadline for application is 4:30 pm on Friday, March 16, 2018. Further information is available by contacting the township office at (705) 377-5726.

Have you got any Irish in you? Or are you just going to pretend that you do this St Patrick’s Day. You can dress up in green with shamrocks and ribbons and beads while drinking green tinged beverages, either way, Happy Saint Paddy’s Day to all.

The Providence Bay Curling Club will be hosting their annual year end wind up and fish fry on Sunday, March 18.

A happy belated birthday wish to Janet Fathers who celebrated last weekend.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Darlene Bie who celebrates on March 19. Also celebrating on March 19 is Donald Patterson AKA Duck. Wendy Wunsch, formerly of Cranston Road, celebrates March 20. Happy Birthday wishes to all.

The Annual Bradley McAllister Memorial 4 on 4 fundraising hockey Tournament will be held on March 23, 24 and 25. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to come out and support this volunteer community initiative. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Rosalyn Seabrook at (705) 377-5132.

The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on Tuesday, March 27 at the Providence Bay Centennial Hall. Dinner will be served at 5 pm and ends at 8 pm. Dinner includes: Spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, Caesar salad, dessert, and choice of beverage. Tickets will be available at the door but are requested to be purchased in advance. They are available at Mindemoya Home Hardware Building Centre, Buie’s General Store in Spring Bay, the Mini-Mutchmor in Providence Bay and by contacting Matt Young at (705) 377-7149. Adults are $12 and children under 10 years old are $8. Please come out and support your local Lions Club.

This is also the date for the monthly euchre tournament, so bring your partner along for dinner and then enjoy the rest of the evening playing euchre.
