Elaine Denovan of Providence Bay passed away peacefully with her loving husband by her side on Saturday, June 24. At Elaine’s request, cremation has taken place. There was no service but memorial donations may be made to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary. Our condolences go out to Sandy at this difficult time.

The euchre tournament scores from June are as follows: First place with 83 points went to Bill and Laura. They also won for most lone hands scoring a whopping eight. Second place winners are Graham and Sheila with 77 points, and third place was a tie between Bev and Sally, Pat and Theresa with 75 points each. The low hands of the evening were Linda and Marg. As usual, a good time was had by all. Just a reminder, the weekly Tuesday night euchre is currently on hold until September. The monthly euchre tournaments will continue on the last Tuesday of each month. The Rockville Hall wants to remind everyone that if you are looking for a euchre game night they’re held each Tuesday throughout the summer, so come out and join them at their hall. It was an emotional day for some on July 1, 2017 as plaques for the memorial trees in the Providence Bay Village Square were given to family members who tied them to each tree in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us. All volunteers were publicly acknowledged and given a good homemade pie cooked by Mary Jo Gordon and Alex Baran.

The square was officially opened and looks fantastic with all of the gardens, trees, and benches. The children’s art corner consists of painted fish that were all painted by the students from all our public schools. The kids all did a fantastic job and the art looks fantastic. There is also a wooden bear sculpture done by a local artist. There are still spots where further pieces of art will be displayed.

The Canada Day House Decorating contest was a lot of fun and our little village looked very patriotic with many homes flying flags and banners. The first place winners were Lyle and Sharon Dewar with their themed yard “Raking Hay for Canada Day” using hay bales in their display. Second place winner was Marg Cranston. Third place winners were Ashley, Tieren and Ayriss Noble. Fantastic job kids. Honourable Mention goes to Cheryl Sheppard. Thank you to the Discovery Centre Board and the Municipality of Central Manitoulin for supplying the prizes.

The Canada Day fireworks on the beach were spectacular. There was a great turnout by many people to celebrate our amazing country. Thank you to the Township of Central Manitoulin, Heritage Canada and the Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club who made it possible. The Lions were out again collecting donations for next year’s celebration which we hope will be just as fantastic.
