Providence Bay News & Notes

Cheryl Sheppard had visitors over for a rib BBQ on June 10. Overnight visitors were Merwyn and Sandra Sheppard of Rockville and Dorothy Cronk of Tehkummah. They enjoyed many other visits from local friends and others that were attending the Bluegrass in the Country Music Festival that was held that weekend.

The Huron Island Time ice cream shop in the Harbour Centre has opened its doors to patrons on weekends, and will soon be open full time hours. We look forward to the outdoor concerts that they host and to the delicious treats that are available for sale along with their Farquhar’s ice cream.

We’re so happy to see the new furbaby addition to the Morgan family. Sandy and Mike Morgan welcome Harvey to the community. You may see them out on their walks.

A big thank you goes out to Fire Chief John Reid for filling the water barrels out by the “Welcome to Providence Bay” sign and planters on the Government Road. So, when you’re out and about, stop and check the soil and if necessary, please water our thirsty friends.

We’re also very thankful to Mike Meeker for donating his Meeker’s Magic Mix for our Providence Bay community gardens.

June 21 is the official first day of summer. Also known as the summer solstice and is the day that has the longest hours of daylight. It’s also a day to recognize our First Nation neighbours and their unique culture as we celebrate National Aboriginal Day.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Ingrid Blay’s husband who celebrates on June 22. If you see him out and about, make sure to wish him a great day, and let him know that you heard it here first. We also wish a happy birthday to council member Derek Stephens who celebrates on June 26. Former resident John Payette also celebrates his birthday on June 27.

The monthly Seniors Twilight Club Euchre Tournament will be held on Tuesday, June 27. They will continue to hold the monthly tournaments on the last Tuesday of each month for July and August. The other weekly euchre games held every Tuesday will be on hiatus for two months. The Rockville Hall social committee has graciously invited all patrons to attend their weekly euchre socials each Tuesday over the summer.

We have a very festive day planned for Canada Day celebrations. It all begins on the beach with the Discovery Centre hosting sand sculpture/castle building competitions, a balloon toss, scavenger hunt and many other fun activities.

The township once again will be serving free Canada Day cake and lemonade in the Centennial Hall.

The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club will be hosting their annual yard sale (they’re still looking for any donations) and will also be having a BBQ selling hot dogs, October fest sausages and beverages.

The local band “The Islanders” will be holding their outdoor concert on the bandstand at the Harbour Centre.

It’s our 150th anniversary so let’s show our civic pride and start decorating our homes and yards. Who knows, you may even win a prize. 

The grand opening of our Village Square will also be held on July 1 from 2 to 3 pm. They’ll announce the families of the six dedicated memorial trees, celebrate the inaugural installation at the kid’s community art corner and recognize the contribution of over 30 volunteers and donors. You’ll also get to meet the winning artist of the Great Lakes sculpture competition.

Due to the exceptional fundraising efforts of the Providence Bay and Spring Bay Lions Club they have given an additional contribution towards this year’s Providence Bay fireworks display. We’re sure to have a truly memorable and spectacular finish to the show this year. Thank you to the Lions for all your support in the community.

So come on down for a beach social and enjoy all the Canada Day festivities.
