Lesley Kerckhoff and daughter Emily were home from CFB Petawawa to visit Grandpa Les Glanville and to ensure that Grandma Elsie Glanville was comfortably settled in her new home at the Wikwemikong Nursing Home.

Condolences go out to Rick and Wendy Hibma when news was received that his sister passed away. She was actively involved in helping out in Haiti and had done a presentation to the congregation of the United Church.

The Providence Bay and Spring Bay Lions Club extends a sincere thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the New Year’s dance such a success. Thanks to the good folks who contributed the delicious food, helped decorate the hall, as well as the generous donors to our silent auction. Congratulations to the winner of the 50/50 draw–Mike Neill and also to Matt Young who won the 50/50 draw at the Halloween dance. Proceeds from the draws have gone to support the Manitoulin Family Services Food Bank.

The Manitoulin Snowdusters Snowmobile Club groomer has made it out our way and the trails are now officially open. Please keep in mind that the ice is not yet safe for riding and with the warmer weather being forecast for this week, it may be some time before it is safe.  Just a reminder: If the ice is 7 cm (3”) or less stay off the ice, ice that is at least 10 cm (4”) is safe for ice fishing, walking or cross country skiing.  Ice that is 12 cm (5”) is safe for a snowmobile or ATV, a car or small pick-up truck requires at least 20-30 cm (8”-12”) and a medium truck requires at least 30-38cm (12-15”). If you’re not sure, stay off!

We enjoyed some fantastic hockey this weekend at the Annual Pearson Brothers Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Providence Bay Arena this weekend. The Winners of the 35ers division for the A final were the Wikwemikong Reds who beat out M’Chigeeng and the B final was the Gore Bay Fossils who beat out the Providence Bay Refills. The sportsmen division A final was won by the Stuart Pearson team beating out Gore Bay. The B final was the Ryan Stewart team from Manitowaning who beat out the Karn team. Great hockey and a good time was had by all.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Bonnie B who celebrates on January 22.
