The fall season and the leaves changing colour in Providence Bay is a very special time of year. The spectacular display of vibrant hues is visible all over our beautiful Manitoulin Island and makes fall road tripping a mandatory tradition. While out there, make sure to check out all the community displays for the Harvest Glory Days contest.
Many people are still spotting salmon that have come to the Mindemoya River to spawn. They can be seen from the fish viewing platform and the footbridge. It’s important to remember though, that the Mindemoya River from the bridge (dam) on Highway 551/542 downstream to the bridge on Highway 551 is a designated fish sanctuary and has been since September 25 and continues until October 31.
Raymond Smith of London has been here for a week staying at his home while visiting with friends in the area.
Marley Neill who flew out to Calgary to visit her Mom, Anna Delamorandiere, drove back home across the country with her. They followed snow storms all the way. Although we know winter is coming, we hope they left that white stuff back on the prairies for now. Anna stayed in Providence Bay for the weekend to visit with friends before heading down country to visit her Mom in Hamilton.
Visiting from Windsor is Kathy Warner (nee Simpson) to spend time with family and friends. Eddy and Betty Simpson have also been home for the past few weeks at their summer cottage.
Glen and Mona Bryan, also from Windsor, are home at their beachside summer cottage that they’ve affectionately named Hummingbird Retreat. We hope all the hummingbirds have begun their trek south, the nights are beginning to get too cold for them.
There was a large bear sighted running down the Government Road. Black bear will travel long distances on their quest for food so this one may be long gone. They’re busy this time of year trying to fatten up for their winter hibernation. They will seek out nuts, fruit, bird feeders, pet food, garbage cans and other sources of food. If a bear finds a source of food, they will return again and again. Remove bear attractants to help keep them out of our community and decrease the incidence of bear conflict.
The Mutchmor hosted a social gathering on Friday, October 5 to celebrate Bill and Marlene Jewell’s 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations and warm wishes to them for many more!
The Providence Bay/Spring Bay Lions Club held a gathering October 6 to raise the Canadian flag on the new pole that was erected in the Village Square. What a beautiful and patriotic addition to our beautiful beach area.
Although Thanksgiving weekend has come and gone, it’s a good idea to give thanks all year long. Studies have proven that reflecting on the positive aspects of your day and life as you fall asleep each night, improve your sleep and help you to start your next day off on a more positive note. Practice gratitude regularly.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Ceilidh Gilchrist of Toronto who turns 6 on October 12. Birthday wishes also go out to Audrey (Toots) McDermid in the Manitoulin Centennial Manor who celebrates on October 13.
The Providence Bay Curling Club is hosting its registration, annual general meeting and potluck on October 20 from 3 to 7 pm. New curlers are welcome. No experience necessary.
