Providence Bay News and Notes

Local resident Carrie Spry, a constable with Wikwemikong Police Services, was recognized as a local hero there for taking life saving action to save one man’s life at a ceremony December 17, 2015. Michael Mantha MPP was there.

What a crazy, windy Christmas Eve day, lots of people were out watching the waves crashing onto the sand beach and over the rocks at the dock. Several trees went down, some people lost shingles and siding from their homes and some areas, mostly off-island, even lost power. Many were restored in time to enjoy a green Christmas Day. The wind brought snow to the area finally. And now that the days are getting longer, it looks like everyone will be able to enjoy winter activities after all. So bundle up and enjoy!

Janet Fathers was out doing what she loves the most at Christmas and that’s bringing joy by singing Christmas carols for people in the community. Perhaps next year we could get a group of people together and help her spread some glorious cheer throughout town.

Sally and Jim Dawson from Toronto were up visiting Toots McDermid and family. Nathan Kay was also in town visiting Tabby and Sharlene Kay.

Trevor and Ingrid Blay went down to the Kingston area visiting family for Christmas.

Cheryl Sheppard went to Varadero, Cuba over the holidays. While down there she enjoyed the 29 degree weather days by enjoying the sand, sun, and surf. The resort offered opportunities to kayak and catamaran.

The New Year’s Eve dance was once again a great success thanks to the Providence Bay and Spring Bay Lions Club and all our wonderful volunteers. DJ John Roy kept everyone on the dance floor twisting, shouting, hopping and bopping.

The monthly Curling Club breakfast will be held again this upcoming January 7, 2016. This fundraiser for the club offers a wonderful full breakfast on the first Thursday of every month. It starts at 7 am and ends by 9:30. They are also open weekdays for coffee and toast.

Quilting will be resuming at the Twilight Club on January 15, 2016, weather permitting.

The annual Pearson Cup hockey tournament will be held the weekend of January 15, 16, and 17, 2016. Tor register your team, contact Darren Dewar at 705-377-5281

With the snow and colder weather upon us make sure to think of our community members who may need a hand clearing snow off of walkways and driveways or who can’t get out to pick up supplies. A quick call is all it takes.
