Providence Bay fire levels appliance shop

PROVIDENCE BAY—A Wednesday, May 23 fire on Cranston Road in Providence Bay has totally destroyed a garage containing a number of washing machines and dyers, leaving behind only the scorched remains of the various appliances and a few charred pieces of wood.

The Central Manitoulin Fire Department received the call around 11 am on Wednesday and were able to respond within about 15 minutes, but the building was fully engaged when they arrived.

“No one was in the building at the time of the fire,” said Central Manitoulin Fire Chief John Reid. “I spoke to the owner and he said he had not been in the building at all that day.”

The fire was so intense that it melted the siding on the nearby residence, but the volunteer fire fighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading and were able to save the home.

Although the cause of the fire was not apparent due to the extensive damage sustained by the site, Mr. Reid said there were no concerns raised by the blaze.

“Nobody was hurt and that’s really all that matters,” said Doug Squires, who noted his business was not operating at that site. “Now its just all about taking care of fixing the house.”

The home and building were insured.
