SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION—The Northeast Town Fire Department has been busy responding to calls on the Sheguiandah First Nation, so many in such a short time frame, in fact, that the police and Ontario Fire Marshal have been notified.

Northeast Town CAO Dave Williamson, speaking on behalf of the fire department, told The Expositor that firefighters have been called out six times in two weeks to respond to a fire in an abandoned house and five grass fires along the roadside on the First Nation—two of which were Sunday night, May 1.

“The cause of the fires is unknown and, as a result, we have notified the Ontario Provincial Police and United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police and also the Ontario Fire Marshal,” Mr. Williamson said. “It is significant enough that it’s caught our attention,” he added.

The CAO explained that the abandoned house is located right in the community while the fires were not affiliated with any property owner, but along roadsides each time.

To report information about the fires, contact the UCCM Police at 705-377-7135.
