GORE BAY—The annual Porter Clark Purvis Hockey Tournament in Gore Bay never fails to deliver great hockey action and tremendous fan support and this year’s tournament certainly lived up to this billing.
The tournament, which includes teams in the sportsmen and 40-plus divisions, started last Friday evening and continued until late Sunday afternoon.
Average Joe’s shut out the Lockyer team 5-0 in the Sportsmen A division final. This marks back to back championships for this team in this division.
Average Joe’s, who were coached by Richard Patterson, included Mike Stolar, Brett Stolar, Josh Smith, Mike Leon, Justin Sweeney, Bruce Cada, Kyle Miobertolo, Ryan Deins, Andrew Troughbridge, Cory Stolar, Ronnie Stolar and Shawn Persquine.
The 40-plus A division final pitted the Orford team against M’Chigeeng. It was a real battle with overtime required to determine the winner.
M’Chigeeng won the game during an overtime power play by a score of 4-3. The M’Chigeeng team included Bruce Recollet, Sonny George, Zeke Peltier, John Ainslie, Warren Corbiere, Kyle Debassige, Dave Webkamigad, John Ense, Mike Panamick and Greg Mishibinijima.
In the sportsmen B division final, the Russell Thunder squad defeated the Riching team by a core of 4-3. It was 4-1 for Russell Thunder until late in the game when the Riching squad put on a furious comeback to close to within one goal.
The Russell Thunder team included Sheldon Campbell, Mitch Strain, Dylan Hunter, Matt Newlands, Braydon Newton, Brendan Pheasant, Tristan Argue, Lucas Mackan, Harrison Noble, Jeff Crawford, Travis Orford, Dustin Varey, Steve Green and Andrew Orford. Coach of the team was Hye Clark.
The 40-plus B final was won by the Blodgett team, with a 7-4 victory over Fossil White. The winning team, coached by Ken Blodgett, included Dave Wright, Don Wright, Paul Wright, Lee Hayden, Roger Hayden, Leland McQuarrie, Paul Flanagan, Cole McLaughlin, Jed Graham, Jeff Fenerty, Scott McDougall, Peter Tomlin and Alain Desaulniers.
