SUDBURY–The Greater Sudbury Police Service would like to advise the public about a recent email scam that specifically targets people whose names and email addresses were revealed in the ashleymadison.com security breach.
This scam involves an email in which the sender claims to have personal data retrieved from leaked information through the website ashleymadison.com. The sender threatens to reveal the target’s attempts at infidelity to friends, family and employers via Facebook unless a Bitcoin is transferred to an attached Bitcoin address. A Bitcoin is a digital currency apparently worth about $430 U.S.
Crime prevention is a shared commitment. The Greater Sudbury Police Service discourages cooperation with any person or organization involved with on-line extortion. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre provides crime prevention information and the opportunity for victims to report online scams. Their website is: www.antifraudcentre.ca
